Welcome to Southwater Bowls Club
About Southwater Bowls Club
Our small friendly club was founded in 1990 and we currently have just over 80 members. Some of our members play outside in the summer on our lovely green, some of them carry on through the winter with short mat bowls in the Lardner Room in The Ghyll.
We enjoy seeing new faces and visitors are always made welcome, whether you are coming to see what bowls is all about, a bowler who has just moved into the area, are supporting a visiting team or just want to sit and watch and enjoy the sunshine (hopefully). Everyone is most welcome!

The green is available daily to full members for free practice (subject to maintenance and matches). We have coaching available by one of our qualified coaches who are always happy to help. Once you are a member, you will have the opportunity to take part in any of our internal competitions, some of which run through the season and others which run on a single day, which also gives a good opportunity to catch up with other members.
We play friendly matches against other local teams all summer and are in 2 local mixed leagues and a ladies' league. We also field teams in many competitions and are proud to have members who represent the County. Organised roll ups are held every Friday at 6.00pm.
Our Short Mat section plays in The Ghyll and can be found in there every Tuesday throughout the year from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm.
Once you are a member you can just turn up and be put into a team, a social way of spending a few hours whilst also gently exercising.
The Short Mat Section has a team in a local league, plays friendly matches against other local clubs and also has County players amongst its members.
If you have never tried short mat bowls why not give it a go. All you need is a pair of flat soled shoes. Please call Steve on 07895 155455.
For anyone that hasn’t played before we hold free 'Come and Try' sessions from early May to the end of August. These are held every Wednesday evening from 18:30 and every Saturday morning between 10:00 and 12:00.
No need to book, just come along wearing flat soled shoes/trainers and the rest of the equipment will be provided.
Members will be on hand to select the correct size of bowls for you and to show you what to do with them and then it’s onto the green to give it a try.
Social Events
Various social events are arranged for all members of the club. These are usually held in the clubhouse and details are emailed out to all members and posted on the clubhouse notice board during the summer season. If any member has an idea for a different social event or would like to organise one, please contact us using the form below or speak to our Social Secretary.
Coffee Mornings - Don't forget coffee mornings for all members will be held in the clubhouse on the first Wednesday of each month from 10.00 to 11.30, just drop in. Only charge is the usual tea/coffee charge in the honesty box, although any donations of cake will always be most welcome!
